Laptop bags are all over the place today. Walk into any store that sells women's purses or backpacks and you will find at least a couple bags designed specifically for holding a laptop. The market for laptop bags is even bigger when you shop online!

Some of these bags are designed specifically to carry a laptop and some accompanying accessories, while others are designed more like travel bags with space for a laptop and accessories as well as other items that you may need to carry on a trip.

So, why are people purchasing bags just for their laptop? Simply put: because there is no other way to transport a laptop computer out of the home without sacrificing one of these things:

The primary reason laptop bags are purchased is to ensure that the actual laptop is not damaged. Laptops are quite expensive and there is no such thing as making cheap or fast repairs. At 5.5 pounds the Samsung R580 feels quite lightweight while its 15.6 inch LED backlit screen is clear and has vibrant colors. It is also one of the few laptops within its class to have an Intel Core i5 430M processor which delivers performance on the same level as most multimedia and gaming laptops. It also packs in Nvidia GeForce 310M discrete graphics allowing it to do everything from playback smooth HD video and playing many 3D games to doing a little video editing and 3D rendering. Combined with its 1366 x 768 pixel resolution and a Blu-ray combo drive and you have a laptop that can handle pretty much whatever you throw at it. The laptop's 4GB of DDR3 memory and 500GB hard disk drive help to make things even more stable and memorable.

In terms of connections the Samsung R580 has a number of unique features including high performance wireless-n wifi, a HDMI port, an eSATA/USB combo port and an ExpressCard expansion slot. Other features include a VGA port, integrated stereo speakers and three more USB ports to go with an SD card reader. For such a mainstream laptop, the Samsung R580 has some very good sound, making it great for both Blu-ray movies as well as listening to music. Unfortunately the six-cell battery only gives it a battery life of two hours and 30 minutes which is good enough for most mobile situations but not good enough for most mainstream mobiles which have a battery life of five hours and above.

Overall, the Samsung R580 has been very aggressively priced by Samsung as it offers performance that very few laptops in the same class can achieve. While it can do practically everything smoothly and comfortably, it isn't really the best mainstream laptop to go mobile with. Granted, it does offer a reasonable amount of battery life in a pinch, but it definitely works much better as a stationary or fixed position desktop replacement laptop since it outperforms most laptops and desktops in the same class. The awesome price sweetens the deal immensely making it ideal for the gamer and multimedia enthusiast who doesn't need the extra mobility of a laptop but more the excellent performance that only the Samsung R580 can bring.

Toshiba Satellite

Large, solid and packing a 15.6-inch display the Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018 is sturdy and slightly generic with its matte black chassis and silver plastic keyboard bezel. However, since it is designed as more of a workhorse than a trendy laptop this shouldn't be an issue. With the large chassis comes plenty of space for a full keyboard. This includes large keyboard keys along with a numeric keypad. Toshiba have made sure that everything is in its right place although the space-bar is slightly shorter than normal making it good for touch typists.

The track pad is a bit over-sized with rather large buttons. This makes for a very easy to use and comfortable track pad and keyboard. While it only weighs six pounds, the Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018 does feel a lot bulkier than it really is mainly because of the more solidly built chassis. The 15.6-inch screen offers an anti-glare coating so you can use the laptop even in direct sunlight.

While the Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018 doesn't offer the latest components it still delivers great performance with an Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400 processor and 3GB of DDR3 memory. A mid-range 320GB hard disk drive offers a good amount of storage capacity while the Intel GMA 4500M integrated graphics offers smooth 720p HD movies on the via the display's 1366 x768 pixel resolution. Connection-wise the laptop is top-notch though as it offers wireless-n wi-fi connectivity, a VGA port, two USB ports, two USB/eSATA combo ports and a flash media card reader. A DVD burner rounds up this list by offering the ability to playback and archive disc media.

Thankfully the Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018 is more than powerful enough to handle multiple applications including office applications, Internet browsing, multimedia and some casual gaming. While the laptop only has a standard six-cell li-ion battery, battery life is very good at three hours and 10 minutes for a single charge. All in all, the Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018 is a very solid 15.6 inch laptop offering which should do most mainstream users on a budget very well. While it probably does better as a desktop replacement unit, it still offers respectable portability with good battery life and good all-round performance.

HP Compaq Presario

For its price the HP Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX looks very professional. Bearing a glossy finish lid with black screen bezel and silver keyboard bezel, the laptop looks like something far more expensive. There's plenty of space for the keyboard keys and it even comes with a numeric keypad. Typing on the keyboard is very comfortable while the touch-pad is smooth and responsive something which only a few netbooks can offer. The HP Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX's 15.6 inch display is bright and clear while the chassis is fairly solid. At 6.2 pounds it does weigh a bit more than your average 15.6 inch laptop but the build quality more than makes up for it.

Powered by an Intel Celeron 900 processor and 2GB of DDR2 memory the HP Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX is more or less as powerful as most netbooks. However its older Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics is still equal if not better than most netbooks, unless you're talking about the ION powered ones. Thanks to the displays 1366 x 768 pixel resolution you can watch up to 720p HD video which is relatively smooth using the integrated graphics. A 250GB hard disk drive offers a good amount of storage while its DVD burner offers allows DVD playback and archiving, something which no netbook can do.

Other features on the HP Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX include good Altec Lansing speakers and wireless-n wi-fi connectivity. Other connections include three USB ports, a VGA port and an RJ-45 Ethernet LAN port. Performance is good so long as you don't multi task or use too many different applications at one go. This fits with a basic netbook performance but the extra features and space offers a bit more functionality than any netbook you can find on the market. While the laptop does run on a Windows 7 Home Premium operating system it is responsive as long as you treat it just like a netbook allowing it to run most office applications and surf the Internet.

Overall, the HP Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX is a good basic 15.6 inch laptop that rivals most performance netbooks in price as well as performance. This makes it ideal for the basic user who doesn't need more than a netbook but wants something with a larger screen and a DVD drive.

Wireless Computing

Wi-Fi was probably one of the most revolutionary transitions in modern times. Before the advent of Wi-Fi or wireless computing technology, users were tethered to their desks, routing everything through a LAN line and restricted in where they used their faster and more powerful computing technology by how long their cables were. Wi-Fi changed all that. Suddenly, you had a mobile network that allowed people the freedom to roam and still connect to the Internet and their emails.

A sociological transformation

It is easy to underestimate the impact of wireless computing. It has become a common sight to see cafés full of people all connected up to a server, yet not a cable in sight. An entire business has grown up around wireless computing - the Internet cafe - that lets anyone, for a small charge, piggyback the establishment's Wi-Fi connection and surf to their hearts content. It is even possible to connect wirelessly using a mobile phone - a situation that would have been unthinkable 25 years ago when you were lucky if you could connect to another phone number using the first mobile 'bricks', let along the fledgling Internet.

Today, we feel short-changed if our mobile phone can't connect to the Internet on demand, 24/7.

What future for wireless computing?

The question of wireless computing's future is uncertain. Many believe that wireless computing has reached its full potential - we now have almost universal coverage thanks to a global satellite system creating a web across the world with very few 'blind spots'. Smart phones are feature-rich and future-proofed to a certain extent, and laptops are smaller, lighter and more processor powerful than ever. The only area that can really see any form of development to enhance wireless computing is in the field of battery-life. The most up to date laptops and Netbooks can achieve up to nine hours on one battery, but after that you are still forced to tether up to a power source to keep your laptop running - hardly a 'wireless' situation by any stretch of the imagination. So for wireless computing to move to a new level and give us true autonomy and control about where and when we use our computers, manufacturers have to address the knotty problem of that infuriating 'low battery' symbol. Perhaps then we'll have truly wireless computing on the go.
